One of Russia’s most valuable military aircraft (so valuable, Moscow has kept it out of most of the Ukraine War) may have crashed outside Moscow on July 23. These claims, emanating in the Ukrainian press, remain unverified.

If true, though, this loss would represent a black eye for the Russian Aerospace Forces because the Sukhoi Su-57 “Felon” remains Russia’s only operational fifth-generation stealth warplane. What’s more, the aircraft has relatively small numbers and is difficult to replace.

Russian Su-57 5th-Generation Fighter Crashes in What May Be a Friendly-Fire Incident: On 23 July, a Russian military jet, which according to eyewitnesses and videos posted on Russian internet sites is a Sukhoi Su-57, crashed in the Moscow Oblast. The aircraft is the latest-generation Russian fighter and is said to demonstrate some level of stealth in its blended-body design.

Both Russian and Ukrainian Telegram channels have reported that the pilot ejected and survived, and there were no reports of casualties on the ground.

The M14 rifle replaced the venerable M1 Garand in 1957 and infamously served as the primary U.S. service rifle for only five years before it was replaced by the M16 rifle. In 2022, the Army selected the SIG Sauer XM5 rifle, later redesignated the M7, to replace the M4 carbine that evolved from the M16.
Designed to increase lethality and precision at long range, troops took issue with the M7’s heavy weight and the reduced ammunition capacity of its 6.8x51mm cartridge.
