Japan plans to buy 400 Tomahawk cruise missiles from the US, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida told lower house lawyers on Monday, as part of his government’s push to acquire long-range deterrents against potential threats.
The Kishida government intends to conclude a purchase agreement in 2023 and deploy the Tomahawks in 2026 and 2027 on Maritime Self-Defense Force vessels equipped with the Aegis missile defense system.
Defense Minister Yasukazu Hamada declared before the Lower House Budget Committee that the government was negotiating with the US side to acquire up to 400 of these missiles.
The Air Force is planning to take a modular approach for the follow-on contract to its Cloud One commercial cloud hosting and services platform, likely with a trio of contracts, procurement documents show.
In a draft acquisition approach market research document published Tuesday, the Air Force reveals that it is considering a “three-contract” modular approach for the follow-on procurement, which it is calling Cloud One Next.

A Ukrainian-made UJ-22 drone has come down in Russia within 70 miles of Moscow. This appears to be the closest a Ukrainian uncrewed aerial system has gotten to the Russian capital and follows the unexpected deployment of additional air defense assets there last month. This incident is also just one of a recent flurry of apparent Ukrainian drone attacks, or at least attempted attacks, on Russian targets in the past 24 hours or so.
Russian forces intensified their multi-week campaign on Tuesday to encircle the city of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine, where the Ukrainian land forces’ commander described the situation as “extremely tense.”
The city has been the site of some of the fiercest engagements of the war, and Russian forces, including mercenary fighters from the Wagner Group, are attempting to cut off the supply lines of the Ukrainian defense.
This would be Russia’s first big victory in almost six months.
