July marks the 110th anniversary of the start of the Somme offensive, one of the bloodiest battles of the First World War, where more than one million soldiers were killed or wounded.
Lasting five months, the Battle of the Somme became a brutal war of attrition as British and French forces fought German troops along a 15-mile stretch of the Western Front. It remains one of history’s most devastating examples of industrialised warfare.
More than a century later, the war in Ukraine has prompted renewed comparisons with the Somme. Despite the vast differences in time and technology, both conflicts have been marked by extensive trench warfare, heavily fortified defensive lines, and costly offensives that have come at an enormous human price.
