The War Zone needs your help and it’s for truly a great cause — the Gary Sinise Foundation!
It’s that time again. We are going to do another fundraiser apparel drive and we need the very best design idea to make the biggest impact possible. We have a few on our end, but I bet our readership, and especially our esteemed commentariat, has something even better.
TWZ shirts and masks have been incredible successes and we are extremely picky about what we offer, with apparel designs that are highly tailored to our unique content and readership.

As the Armed Forces continue experiencing difficulties both with recruiting and retention, the 101st Airborne Division Deputy Public Affairs Officer is taking a different approach.
Major Daniel “Danny” Mathews is passionate about storytelling, especially as it relates to soldiers. “When I arrived at the 101st, I was blown away by the things the soldiers were doing on a daily basis even though it seemed routine to them. Showcasing them on social media in a different way was on my radar,” he explained.

A Russian Su-35 fighter intercepted an unarmed Polish Border Guard plane over the Black Sea, Polish border guards said in a statement.
Meanwhile, the Russian Defense Ministry has repeatedly said that all flights are carried out strictly with international standards without violating other nations’ borders.
According to border guards, the incident occurred on Friday, May 5, during a patrol flight of the Polish Turbolet L-410 aircraft over the Black Sea during the Frontex operation under the command of Romania in the operational area designated by Bucharest.

Only one Allied fighter jet saw combat in World War II. The Gloster Meteor was underpowered, arrived late and inefficient. But it led the way into the jet age and once deflected a flying bomb headed to London by literally knocking it off track with its body.
The jet race
Both sides in World War II had aviation pioneers who knew that the jet age was coming. Piston fighters did much of the fighting during the war. But Germany initially flew a test version of a fighter in 1939, the He-178. Then the Italian Caproni-Campini N.1 flew.

New Guinea is the world’s second-largest island. Given its proximity to Australia, it’s no wonder that the island was one of the most heavily contested battlegrounds of the Pacific War. Historians have called the 1942-1945 campaign for New Guinea “arguably the most arduous fought by any Allied troops during World War II.”
Field conditions on New Guinea during the war were also some of the hardest to endure. It’s estimated that 97% of the Japanese casualties from the campaign came from disease and starvation, not Allied troops.

Tomoya Kawakita was born American in California, but was studying in Japan when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941. While the attack came as a surprise to everyone except the Imperial Japanese Navy, Kawakita might have conducted himself with the integrity of an American citizen. Instead he not only chose to align with the Japanese, he would end up brutalizing American POWs.
After the war, that conduct rightfully came back to haunt him. After being recognized in southern California, his arrest would result in a trial that would go all the way to the Supreme Court.

The first C295 destined for India has completed its first flight, a major step forward in the timeline leading up to its delivery in the second half of 2023. The tactical plane left Seville, Spain, at 11:45 am on May 5 (GMT+1). It touched down at 2:45 pm, having traveled for three hours.
“This maiden flight is a major milestone for India’s pioneering Make in India aerospace program.

Capabilities to deceive opponents and otherwise help to conceal the movements and activities of friendly forces could be as important as physical defenses in any future high-end fight involving the United States, such as one against China in the Pacific. There has been a particular resurgence of interest within the U.S. Air Force in these kinds of capabilities as part of new expeditionary and distributed concepts of operations, which the service has been developing to reduce the vulnerability of its units in a major conflict.
