Recep Tayyip Erdogan now appears certain to be elected Turkey’s next president. His victory will have profound and predictable effects on Turkey’s relationship with the United States. The two countries were already in the process of decoupling, and Erdogan’s re-election will hasten this decade-long process.  In both the United States and Turkey, political and national security elites believe that the other country is not vital for the pursuit of their national security interests.

Turkish firm Meteksan Defence unveiled a model of the new search-and-rescue (SAR) variant of its ULAQ unmanned surface vessel (USV) at the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace (LIMA) Exhibition 2023.
Meteksan’s international sales director Burak Akbaş told Janes on 23 May that the company is positioning the SAR USV to meet requirements in Southeast Asia. He said the platform has been developed for coastguard SAR operations.
The ULAQ SAR USV has an overall length of 7.

The UK Ministry of Defence’s (MoD’s) Human Machine Teaming (HMT) programme reopened to new suppliers on 22 May.
Initially announced in May 2022, the three-year GBP300 million (USD372.4 million) HMT project seeks to collate lessons from the British Army’s experimentation activity in Robotic and Autonomous Systems (RAS) and enable rapid iterations across the full spectrum of potential capabilities.

Financially troubled Virgin Orbit plans to sell its assets to four winning bidders and cease operations, the US-based small satellite launch provider announced on 23 May.
Among the auction winners is Stratolaunch, which has agreed to pay USD17 million for Virgin Orbit’s carrier aircraft, a modified Boeing 747-400 nicknamed ‘Cosmic Girl’, according to a court filing.

Ammonium perchlorate (AP) – an oxidiser used in solid rocket fuels – is a crucial ingredient but can be difficult to source.

Onboard, the vessel can house up to four squadrons of fighters and a multitude of support and tactical aircraft, comprising over 60 planes, with the potential to accommodate up to 90.

The F/A-18E/F Super Hornet is a fighter and assault aircraft designed as the first all-weather platform for the United States military. It can perform conventional assault applications, such as interdiction and close air support, without sacrificing its fighter capabilities.
The F-18 Hornet platform has undergone consistent enhancements to increase its performance and capabilities over time. As a successor to the F-14 Tomcat, the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet entered service with the United States Navy in 1999.
