HMS President, one of only three surviving Royal Navy vessels still afloat that served in the First World War, is facing the scrapyard.
The historic Q-ship has been towed to a breakers yard on the River Thames after years of attempts to save her from falling into disrepair.
Built in 1918 as HMS Saxifrage, she was designed to look like a civilian vessel before revealing hidden guns to attack German U-boats. She also returned to service during the Second World War, protecting St Paul’s Cathedral as an anti-aircraft battery.
After decades on the Thames, HMS President left London in 2016 and was eventually abandoned. Now, the Q-ship Society is making a last-ditch attempt to save her and turn her into a museum.
