Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) has developed a new laser system to counter unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and a manportable version of its cyber-security solution named Intersept.
Both the systems were displayed by MHI at the DSEI Japan 2023 show being held in Chiba from 15 to 17 March.
Company officials told Janes at the show that the laser system can destroy hostile UAVs within a range of 1.2 km.

The US Air Force (USAF) requested USD500 million for hypersonic weapons research and development in fiscal year (FY) 2024, the same amount as the previous year.
Roughly USD150 million would be used to further develop the Lockheed MartinAGM-183A Air-launched Rapid Response Weapon (ARRW), a boost-glide system that in December 2022 saw its first successful launch following three failed tests. The USAF plans to conduct four additional ‘all-up round’ test shots of the completed missile during FY 2024.

German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall has reported a 13% rise in sales to €6.410bn in fiscal year (FY) 2022, compared to €5.658bn in FY2021.
The €752m increase in consolidated sales excludes currency effects, which reduce the sales growth to only 10.5%. The company said this figure is less than the projected 2022 outlook.
Sales growth was registered across the company’s five divisions, with specifically higher results in the Vehicle Systems division, with €2.27bn in sales, and the Weapon and Ammunition business, which saw €1.47bn in sales.
QinetiQ has won the US Armed Forces contract for night vision technology.
The deal is worth $92.65m and includes developing, testing, integrating, deployment and training the digital night vision technology to equip the US Armed Forces.
The deal aligns with the corporate strategy outlined in QinetiQ’s company statement. “The major focus for growth is in our three home countries, the UK, US and Australia, where we are pursuing similar opportunities to support their shared defence and security mission.

Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) displayed a prototype of a high-energy laser system it has developed to counter hostile unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) at the DSEI Japan 2023 show being held in Chiba from 15 to 17 March.
Speaking to Janes at the show, company officials said that KHI has delivered one prototype of this laser energy-based counter-unmanned aircraft system (C-UAS) to the Japanese Ministry of Defense (MoD) in February.
