The Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy has received two new Type 052DM destroyers from the Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Company, with the vessels now serving under the Northern Theatre Command. The two warships, the Heze (number 126) and Zhumadian (number 127), were launched on March 10 and August 28, 2023, before undergoing sea trials. They are respectively assigned to the 10th and 1st Destroyer Detachments of the North Sea Fleet. The Type 052D forms the backbone of the Chinese surface fleet, and is in production on a far larger scale than any other destroyer class in thew world.

The American military AI giant Anduril Industries has signed a memorandum of understanding for direct collaboration with the Republic of China’s top defence research institute the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology (NCSIST), which represents a major landmark in the strengthening of military research and development ties between Taipei and Washington. The agreement covers cooperation in areas that include autonomous systems and the Lattice AI-enabled command and control platform, which is being developed to support realtime battlefield decision making.

Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Aerospace Forces Lieutenant General Alexander Maksimtsev has confirmed that preparations are underway for the deliveries of Su-57 fifth generation fighters at an accelerated rate. “In accordance with the state procurement order, the Russian Aerospace Forces are receiving modern and upgraded weapons and equipment on an annual basis… The delivery of Su-57 fifth-generation fighter jets with modern aircraft armaments and hypersonic weapons is being ramped up,” he stated.

The future on the high seas for the Navy may be one without sailors. Unmanned ships like the USS Mariner and Ranger, and the recently launched USX-1 Defiant, are opening up a world that gives the Navy and other branches incredible capabilities on the water, no seamen necessary.
This quest for drone warships began in earnest in 2010 under the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency’s (DARPA) Anti-Submarine Warfare Continuous Trail Unmanned Vessel (ACTUV) program.
