The great debate regarding the slow pace of innovation in the U.S.
The Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy has received two new Type 052DM destroyers from the Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Company, with the vessels now serving under the Northern Theatre Command. The two warships, the Heze (number 126) and Zhumadian (number 127), were launched on March 10 and August 28, 2023, before undergoing sea trials. They are respectively assigned to the 10th and 1st Destroyer Detachments of the North Sea Fleet. The Type 052D forms the backbone of the Chinese surface fleet, and is in production on a far larger scale than any other destroyer class in thew world.
Ask any historian when Rome officially “fell” and you are likely to get a litany of different dates. For many, the deposition of the boy emperor Romulus Augustulus by Odoacer the German in September 476 marks a definite end to the Western Roman Empire.
Others will point out (rightfully, in the opinion of this author) that the empire endured for another millennium, though its seat of power was unquestionably far to the east, in Constantinople (the Eastern Romans are also now commonly referred to as the Byzantines).
The American military AI giant Anduril Industries has signed a memorandum of understanding for direct collaboration with the Republic of China’s top defence research institute the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology (NCSIST), which represents a major landmark in the strengthening of military research and development ties between Taipei and Washington. The agreement covers cooperation in areas that include autonomous systems and the Lattice AI-enabled command and control platform, which is being developed to support realtime battlefield decision making.
Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Aerospace Forces Lieutenant General Alexander Maksimtsev has confirmed that preparations are underway for the deliveries of Su-57 fifth generation fighters at an accelerated rate. “In accordance with the state procurement order, the Russian Aerospace Forces are receiving modern and upgraded weapons and equipment on an annual basis… The delivery of Su-57 fifth-generation fighter jets with modern aircraft armaments and hypersonic weapons is being ramped up,” he stated.
The future on the high seas for the Navy may be one without sailors. Unmanned ships like the USS Mariner and Ranger, and the recently launched USX-1 Defiant, are opening up a world that gives the Navy and other branches incredible capabilities on the water, no seamen necessary.
This quest for drone warships began in earnest in 2010 under the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency’s (DARPA) Anti-Submarine Warfare Continuous Trail Unmanned Vessel (ACTUV) program.
Leidos’ AUKUS White Paper examines the critical importance of Information Sharing to the success of the AUKUS security partnership, and the cultural, policy and technical challenges that must be addressed to realise its full potential.
The Indian government has informed U.S. officials that it is not interested in procuring the F-35 fighter, according to a recent report by Bloomberg. American officials stated when speaking anonymously that the Indian government appears unlikely to proceed with any major new defence procurements from the United States, despite Washington having lobbied increasingly hard to press the country to increase defence imports.
Will AI eat the world and America’s defense budget? I think of those who toil at the intersection of AI and national security as being divided into three camps: Sprinters hold the most aggressive assumptions and believe profound disruption via artificial general intelligence is imminent; marathoners believe the technology will diffuse selectively, sector-by-sector; and skeptics draw analogies to the dot-com bubble.America’s near-term AI strategy should align with one of these three approaches.
