The Japan Air Self-Defence Forces were reported by U.S. President Donald Trump to have received its first batch of air-to-air missiles to equip its F-35 fifth generation fighters only the last week of October 2025, over eight years after the service received its first F-35s in mid-2017. The statement indicates that the F-35s have been operating without an air-to-air capability for years, raising questions regarding their utility for Japan’s defence.
The Republic of China Army on October 31 operationalised its first battalion of M1A2T Abrams main battle tanks, with the new unit based at Hukou base in Hsinchu County at a ceremony attended by senior political and defence officials. The 3rd Combined Arms Battalion of the 584th Armoured Brigade has transitioned to the tank from the CM-11 Brave Tiger, variant of the M48 tank which dates back to the 1950s. Abrams tanks were first delivered in December 2024, and subsequently underwent ten months of integration and training.

The Russian Armed Forces have reportedly for the first time utilised the new 9M729 Novator ground-launched cruise missile in combat, with the missile having demonstrated an engagement range of over 1200 kilometres, but estimated to have a significantly longer reach of 2,500 kilometres allowing it to strike NATO targets across Europe. UkrainianForeign Minister Andrii Sybiha on October 31 claimed that the missile had been fired 23 times since August 2025, and twice in 2022, indicating that combat use may be intended both for testing purposes and to send shows of force to Western Bloc states.
U.S. President Donald Trump’s 20-point peace plan clearly envisions that Palestinians should continue living in Gaza and that “Israel will not occupy or annex Gaza.” Most of the plan clashes with the goals of the far-right members of Israel’s current ruling coalition, who seek permanent Israeli control of Gaza as part of a “Greater Israel.” However, their vision of a future Gaza in which Israelis replace Palestinians remains very much alive.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps and defence sector have accelerated efforts to develop the service’s ballistic missile arsenal, according to reports from European intelligence sources. Countries in the Western world have attempted to reimpose economic sanctions on and illegalise Iranian ballistic missile development through the United Nations Security Council, although the council’s two non-Western permanent members China and Russia have both argued that they lack the ability to do so without a new vote, which both would be expected to veto to protect their strategic partner.
