Is the UK ready for war now?
Experts from the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) say the UK’s Armed Forces remain highly capable — but warn that capacity would be the immediate challenge in a sudden conflict.
From limited Royal Navy hull numbers and crew shortages, to a reduced UK air fleet and gaps in long-range strike, logistics, and medical support, the report highlights growing pressure points across sea, air, and land forces.
IISS senior fellow Douglas Barrie also assesses that NATO airpower could counter Russia — even with a scaled-back US role — but warns it would be a far tougher challenge if the alliance were confronted by China.
The analysis comes as the UK debates future defence spending priorities, with experts noting that several European allies are rearming at a faster pace than Britain.
