Aerial refueling tankers make American airpower possible. But the Air Force’s KC-135s are more than 60 years old, and their replacement, the Boeing KC-46 Pegasus, has been plagued by design defects, delayed upgrades, spare-parts shortages, maintenance problems, and restricted technical data.
Using a new Government Accountability Office report and interviews with retired Gen. Mike Minihan and former Air Force maintainer Anne Phillips, we examine how the KC-46 became a “Franken-tanker,” why relatively new aircraft are already being cannibalized for parts, and what it means for the aging tanker fleet.
