New photographs have confirmed that the Japan Air Self Defense Force has begun flight testing the air-launched version of its next-generation long-range anti-ship missile, with an F-2 fighter observed carrying the weapon. The missile has received official designation as the Type 25, and represents a substantial evolution of the original Type 12 Surface-to-Ship Missile, incorporating a 1,000 kilometre extended range, compared to roughly 200 kilometres for the Type 12.

On Wednesday, the Ukrainian Air Force reported that a Ukrainian-operated F-16 crashed near the front lines while carrying out combat operations to intercept Russian munitions. This marks the fifth confirmed F-16 lost (eighth, if Russian claims are to be believed) since the aircraft’s debut in the Russo-Ukrainian War.
The exact cause of the aircraft’s crash is unknown, with some speculating that it was shot down by Russian aircraft/air defenses, or that it was damaged by debris while shooting down drones. The F-16 forms a vital component of Ukraine’s air defense strategy.
On July 28, 2026, soldiers of the 4th Squadron, 10th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division gathered for it final formation at Fort Irwin, California, marking an end to one of the U.S. Army’s oldest units. The unit, which traces its lineage back to the Buffalo Soldiers, was deactivated the next day.
Newly minted United Kingdom (UK) Labor Prime Minister Andy Burnham is signing off on providing defense technology to Ukraine designed to neutralize the Russian air defenses used to intercept Kyiv’s missiles and drones.
The UK will hand over the intellectual property (IP) for the new technology so that Ukraine can build this system on its own under license in-country rather than relying on deliveries from the UK for its production lines.

Acting Secretary of the Navy Hung Cao appointed John Cremins — a former Navy SEAL and defense executive — to serve as the sea service’s top advisor on all policies, oversight and activities associated with intelligence, counterintelligence, security, irregular warfare and special operations.
Cremins was officially named as the new deputy under secretary of the Navy for intelligence and security (DUSN I&S) in a press release on Wednesday.
After nearly two weeks of strikes on Iranian sites by the United States, which included President Donald Trump threatening to strike Iran hard, what followed instead was an unofficial ceasefire, in which the U.S. stopped striking Iran for a few days, and Iran also refrained from strikes.

DAYTON, Ohio — The Air Force is gearing up to begin prototyping and testing its next-generation engine so it can be retrofitted onto an aircraft before the end of the decade, according to a service official.
The Next-Generation Adaptive Propulsion (NGAP) program recently completed a pre-prototyping readiness review, John Sneden, portfolio acquisition executive for propulsion, told reporters this week at the Air Force’s Life Cycle Industry Days.
