A shadowy cat-and-mouse game between Chinese submariners and U.S. military forces tasked with tracking them is, by all accounts, increasing in scope and frequency in the Pacific. One stark example of this was recently highlighted by a Chinese newspaper’s report about a previously undisclosed incident in a highly strategic coordinator in the South China Sea that occurred on January 5, 2021, some details of which the U.S. military’s top command in the Pacific has disputed.

Ukraine said on Thursday it had repelled a day of Russian attacks in and around the ruined eastern city of Bakhmut and made advances of one kilometer in some places while buying time for “certain planned actions.”
The head of the Wagner mercenary force, which is leading the Russian attack on Bakhmut, said his forces had advanced up to 400 meters. “We are pushing Bakhmut to the end,” he said in an audio recording on his Telegram channel.

The US Department of the Air Force has issued a classified industry solicitation for an engineering and manufacturing development contract for the Next Generation Air Dominance Platform (NGAD) program with the intent of awarding a contract in 2024. NGAD will replace the legendary F-22 Raptor as the main air superiority fighter.
“The NGAD platform is a vital element of the family of air domain systems that represents a generational leap in technology from the F-22, which it will replace,” said Frank Kendall, Secretary of the Air Force.

A Chinese comedian who told a joke comparing the behaviour of his dogs to a military slogan has been arrested.
The company that hired Li Haoshi was also fined 14.7m yuan (£1.7m), and Mr Li could face time in prison.
Police in Beijing said they had opened an official investigation into his performance, which they said “caused a severe social impact”.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday thanked U.S. President Joe Biden for supporting an international plan to train Ukrainian Air Force pilots on Western fighters like the U.S.-made F-16.
“I welcome the historic decision of the United States and @POTUS to support an international fighter jet coalition,” Zelensky said in a tweet. “This will greatly enhance our army in the sky. I count on discussing the practical implementation of this decision at the #G7 summit in Hiroshima.

In his final weeks at the Defense Innovation Unit, Mike Madsen is helping its newly sworn-in chief get poised to “really take DIU to the next level,” he told DefenseScoop in an interview on Thursday.
“My term ends on June 9. Well, I think it’s June 11 — but that’s a Sunday — so we’ll back it up to the Friday before [which is June 9],” he explained.
Madsen joined the U.S. military in 1994.

Dick Winters, ‘Band of Brothers‘ Inspiration, Dies. Major Richard “Dick” Winters, died January 2, 2011 in central Pennsylvania. He was 92. Winters’ quiet leadership was chronicled in the book and television miniseries Band of Brothers. Winters wasn’t sure he would live through the war. He told writer Stephen Ambrose that he knelt down and prayed after D-Day, “If somehow I manage to get home again, I promised God and myself that I would find a quiet piece of land someplace and spend the rest of my life in peace.

The Royal Navy will deploy a carrier strike group to the Indo-Pacific region as part of strengthening its defense ties with Japan and other nations in the area, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced on Thursday on the eve of the G7 summit meeting in Hiroshima.
Confirmation of the planned deployment of one of the Royal Navy’s two 65,000-tonne aircraft carriers came when Sunak and his Japanese counterpart, Fumio Kishida, agreed on May 18 on what is called the Hiroshima Agreement. This far-reaching pact encompasses economic, defense, security and technological collaboration.
