Two months after announcing mandatory testosterone screenings, and weeks after rolling back an initial plan for it, the Department of Defense is directing all male service members ages 30 and above to get screened to see if they have a deficiency.
On Thursday, the Defense Department issued “Clinical Practice Guideline for Testosterone Deficiency in the Male Service Member.” The new guidance is effective “immediately,” according to a Pentagon spokesperson, and notes that health assessment questions around the military are being updated to match the new rules.
The Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES), a military retail organization that serves troops, veterans and their families, said it is investigating a string of suspicious messages sent to its customers through email and the store’s official app.

As many as 16,300 troops could be granted medical shaving waivers in the coming months. If those troops cannot meet the Pentagon’s new “clean-shaven” standards over the next year, they could be separated from the military under new grooming policies.
Numbers provided to Task & Purpose by the Army, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Space Force for service members with shaving waivers were current as of September. The Navy’s data indicated the number of troops diagnosed with medical conditions that prevent them from shaving, but did not specify whether those sailors had been granted waivers.
