A 10-year-old retired military working dog has finally been reunited with his beloved handler after more than two years apart.
In 2018, U.S. Army Sergeant Michael Fletcher, a K-9 handler, was paired with Dasty (rhymes with “nasty”), a Dutch Shepherd, while stationed at Fort Huachuca in Cochise County, Arizona – but it wasn’t love at first sight for the pair.
There was a period of adjustment and bonding and it took about three months before Dasty began to trust and listen to Fletcher, who had previously been paired with two other dogs.

A force restructuring that shifted soldiers from other jobs into air defense more than doubled last year. In fiscal year 2024, 173 soldiers voluntarily reclassified into air defense positions, up from just 73 the year before, officials told Task & Purpose. The Army has specifically been prioritizing moving soldiers into long-range air defense positions over short-range, Col. Don Fagnan from Army Human Resource Command told Task & Purpose. The Army’s chief information office is about to publish a memorandum that establishes two pilot efforts aimed at streamlining the service’s continuous authority to operate (cATO) processes, as well as lay the foundation for other programs to join in.
