Europe’s standard main battle tank (MBT), the German-manufactured Leopard 2A7, boasts a range of critical capabilities that make it one of the most advanced MBTs on the market.
The Norwegian government procured 54 Leopard 2A7s on 3 February 2023 from the Munich-based company Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW).
The latest in this procurement activity will see Düsseldorf-based defence company, Rheinmetall, enable these capabilities as KMW’s subcontractor. Rheinmetall will manufacture the Leopard’s key components.

Preparations for the arrival of Western tanks
The United States and other Western countries announced their intention to provide Leopard 2, Challenger, and M1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine in the coming months. With half its tank fleet already lost, Russia has to compete with an increasingly sophisticated Ukrainian navy.
A recent video posted by Ukraine Weapons Tracker shows the crucial role of the US TOW missile in the Ukraine-Russia conflict, stoking fear among Russian forces.
What is the TOW missile system, and how powerful is it?
The TOW missile system is a type of guided anti-tank missile system used by militaries around the globe. TOW stands for “Tube-launched, Optically-tracked, Wire-guided” and refers to the method by which the missile is launched, traced, and guided to its target.

Ukrainian tank crews have been quick to learn how to operate the eight Leopard 2 tanks donated by Oslo, Norwegian military officials say.
“The Ukrainians have proven to be quite good when it comes to learning new Western [tanks]. It is easier to use, because it is designed with operation in mind,” said Lieutenant-Colonel Palle Ydstebø of the Norwegian Defense Academy. “This may partly be due to something as banal as the comfort and space in the carriages being much better than in the old Soviet equipment.
