Dick Winters, ‘Band of Brothers‘ Inspiration, Dies. Major Richard “Dick” Winters, died January 2, 2011 in central Pennsylvania. He was 92. Winters’ quiet leadership was chronicled in the book and television miniseries Band of Brothers. Winters wasn’t sure he would live through the war. The Nazis were racist garbage. But, like many fascists since, they discovered that the very people they declared subhuman were actually full of talent, intelligence and drive. Unfortunately, it didn’t stop their murderous campaign. But it did allow one female test pilot, Countess Melitta von Stauffenberg, to save most of her family.
And if von Stauffenberg is tickling your memory but you can’t remember why, she was related to the famous Colonel Claus von Staffenberg of Operation Valkyrie fame. She even took part in the attempted assassination of Hitler with him.
The Royal Navy will deploy a carrier strike group to the Indo-Pacific region as part of strengthening its defense ties with Japan and other nations in the area, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced on Thursday on the eve of the G7 summit meeting in Hiroshima.
Confirmation of the planned deployment of one of the Royal Navy’s two 65,000-tonne aircraft carriers came when Sunak and his Japanese counterpart, Fumio Kishida, agreed on May 18 on what is called the Hiroshima Agreement. This far-reaching pact encompasses economic, defense, security and technological collaboration.

There are shockwave passes… and then there are shockwave passes. And these photos of a U.S. Navy F-35C stealth jet roaring through the Sidewinder low-level training route in southern California are some of the most impressive of their kind we’ve ever seen.
The F-35C, assigned to Navy’s Air Test and Evaluation Squadron Nine (VX-9) “Vampires,” which is home stationed at Naval Air Weapons Station (NAWS) China Lake, California, left the air around it in shock as it made two passes through the Sidewinder.

With both industry and government organizations racing to adopt artificial intelligence, it is critically important that leaders work with partners who have established ethical AI frameworks, said former Department of Navy CIO Aaron Weis at the recent DefenseTalks summit in Washington, D.C.
The release of ChatGPT has sparked a fiery debate around the potential negative impacts of the large language AI model. Weis says working with partners who operate under ethical AI frameworks will be vital in detecting and reducing unfair biases, which have been known to lack proper data governance.

The U.S. Air Force recently conducted a first-of-its-kind test of the Tactical High-power Operational Responder, also known as THOR. A high-power microwave counter-drone system, the containerized THOR is designed to engage multiple drones at short ranges in a point defense role. This comes as the threat of drones, particularly ones operating in large groups or fully-networked swarms, becomes increasingly urgent around the globe.
