A Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency initiative aimed at developing armed drones that could be launched from other aircraft is approaching a critical design review, with General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc. (GA-ASI) as the only prime contractor remaining in the program.
The LongShot initiative aims to develop an unmanned aerial vehicle that can employ “multiple air-to-air weapons,” according to a DARPA press release that came after phase 1 contracts for preliminary design work were awarded to General Atomics, Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman in 2021.

The U.S. military is reportedly exploring the possibility of integrating AIM-120 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles, or AMRAAMs, onto at least some of the Soviet-designed MiG-29 Fulcrum fighter jets in Ukraine’s inventory. There are serious caveats to this proposition, but it would, if feasible, give the Ukrainian Air Force a new beyond-visual-range air-to-air capability in the form of a highly-capable missile posing a major threat to Russian airpower venturing within its range.

The only doomed Russian aircraft carrier, Admiral Kuznetsov, is best known for the series of unfortunate events that make up its short history. It is questionable whether the carrier will enter service in the future. In addition to spending more time in dry dock than in service, it has been a platform for aircraft accidents and losses while in service.
During its initial deployment in 2016, the Kuznetsov met with perhaps its greatest tragedy off the coast of Syria.

Fort Hood’s III Armored Corps — which includes some of the oldest formations of their types in the U.S. Army, including the 1st Armored Division and 1st Cavalry Division — released a new policy in late January limiting who gets to lovingly stencil a new name on an M1 Abrams main battle tank’s smoothbore gun.
“Only vehicle crews who qualify ‘Distinguished’ on their own platform (combat vehicle) may name their platform” under the new policy, III Corps spokesman Lt. Col. Tania Donovan told Task & Purpose in a statement.
