The US military has recommended against shooting down a Chinese spy balloon that is hovering over the homeland.

General Atomics has offered to sell the Ukrainian government two of its flagship MQ-9 Reaper drones. While the idea of also sending the company’s MQ-1C Gray Eagle to Ukraine has been floated a number of times since Russia’s all-out invasion began, it remains unclear exactly how valuable either type’s contributions could be considering their vulnerability when operating in contested airspace.

General Atomics is now set to build and flight test one of the designs from its Gambit family of modular advanced air combat drones as part of the U.S. Air Force’s secretive Off-Board Sensing Station program, or OBSS. The company says this will offer a chance to validate the Gambit series’ novel design concept, which involves a common ‘chassis’ onto which different ‘body kits’ with vastly different planforms can be mated.

Brazilian Navy

The former Brazilian aircraft carrier Sao Paulo could meet its final fate at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean after it was discovered that its condition may be too poor for it to make the transit to a scrapyard and following its being refused entry to ports in Turkey and Brazil. The 870-foot carrier, which had served the French Navy as Foch prior to its transfer to Brazil in 2000, still contains a considerable quantity of harmful asbestos, leading to concerns about the new plans from the country’s environment minister, among others.

The U.S. government is now accepting applications for a challenge competition aimed at validating open radio access network (Open RAN) technology for U.S. military modernization.
The “2023 5G Challenge: Advanced Interoperability” initiative will be led by the Institute for Telecommunication Sciences division of the Commerce Department’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), and is being sponsored by the Defense Department’s FutureG and 5G Office, which falls under Pentagon Chief Technology Officer Heidi Shyu.
