The latest revelations to emerge from the leak of classified materials from the Department of Defense appear to provide a very different picture of the encounter between a U.K. Royal Air Force RC-135W Rivet Joint electronic surveillance aircraft and a Russian Su-27 Flanker fighter jet over the Black Sea last September 29.
While you can read our original reporting of that incident here, the new account suggests that, following a misunderstood order, a Flanker deliberately fired an air-to-air missile at the spy plane, but that the weapon malfunctioned.

Russian forces can jam some of the GPS-guided weapons that the United States has given Ukraine, including Joint Direct Attack Munitions, or JDAMs, according to Business Insider, which cited leaked documents.
The report leaked online found that four of nine extended-range JDAMs used by Ukrainian forces had missed hitting Russian targets, possibly due to jamming, and it recommended that the Russian jammers be taken out, Insider reported on Tuesday.

NATO is strengthened by Romania’s acquisition of the F-35 JSF. This European country, a member of the Atlantic Alliance, has recently announced the purchase of Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II fifth-generation stealth fighters for its air force.
The decision comes after a year in which Russia invaded Ukraine, prompting the US Air Force to deploy some of these planes to the region.

According to a report from the Dutch Ministry of Defense, the Netherlands Navy intends to equip the De Zeven Provincin (LCF) class air defense and command frigates and submarines with Tomahawk land-attack missiles.
On April 3, Dutch Defence Minister Christophe van der Maat outlined plans to purchase Tomahawk to provide the RNLN a “maritime strike” capacity.

The largest NATO air exercise since the alliance’s founding in 1949 will be taking place this summer, and the U.S. Air National Guard (ANG) will be providing nearly half of the airpower slated to participate. As for how that show of force may be perceived by global threats like Russia as war rages on in Ukraine, senior ANG officials have said they can “take away whatever message they want.”
The expansive exercise has been dubbed Air Defender 2023 (AD23), and it’s scheduled to occur later this year between June 12-23.

In another incident involving ongoing border tensions, Armenia and Azerbaijan exchanged fire on Tuesday in the Nagorno-Karabakh region, which is an area contested by the two countries. The exchange of fire resulted in casualties for both sides.
On Tuesday, defense ministers from both countries released statements regarding the incident and each confirmed that troops had been killed in a clash near the disputed Lachin Corridor.

Signed during the Latin American Defence and Security Exhibition (LADSE) 2023, the MoU provides a framework for the two companies to combine their expertise and explore potential collaboration opportunities to enhance technologies and capabilities in the UAE and Brazilian markets.
This follows another MoU signed on 12 April between EDGE Group and Condor, a leader in non-lethal technologies.
