People have thanked my husband for his service — and they’ve thanked me, too, for the sacrifices I’ve made as his spouse. They mean well. But I sometimes wonder if they realize what they’re truly thanking me for. Most people are probably referring to the time apart — the deployments, the missed birthdays, the nights alone. And I suppose a simple “thank you” fits if that’s what they mean.

The U.S. Navy’s newest and most advanced aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald R. Ford, has left the Mediterranean and is now on its way to the Caribbean, an unusual move that expands on an already significant military buildup in the region.
Officially, the Pentagon says the deployment supports President Donald Trump’s directive to “dismantle transnational criminal organizations and counter narco-terrorism.” 
The Ford’s redeployment adds a massive amount of American firepower to the U.S.

An Army installation’s dining facility is closed because of the government shutdown, officials said. 
The Fort Leavenworth Installation Warrior Restaurant is closed “until further notice,” base officials announced in a Facebook post. The Warrior Restaurant is the sole dining facility, or DFAC, on the Kansas base.
For most junior enlisted soldiers, DFACs are one of the few on-base options for meals, especially if they don’t have cars to get off post.

The U.S. Department of Defence has approved the sale of up to 48 F-35A fifth generation fighters to Saudi Arabia, following months of high level discussions within the Pentagon, which has left the decision with the White House reviving whether to offer the fighters to the Gulf state. The decision was taken ahead of a visit to the United States by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who during previous visits to the country was assessed by analysts to have faced significant pressure to increase defence procurements from the United States.
