Thirty years on, the questions surrounding the RAF Chinook crash on the Mull of Kintyre remain unanswered.
The two pilots were blamed for the disaster – despite there being no flight data recorder, no cockpit voice recorder, no eyewitnesses, and the aircraft itself being 80% destroyed. Years later, the pilots’ reputations were restored and the Defence Secretary apologised to their families.
Now, newly released MOD documents obtained through a Freedom of Information request by BFBS Forces News have reignited the controversy.
Campaigners say the documents reveal that senior officials were aware of serious concerns surrounding the Chinook Mk2’s airworthiness.
