The United States has long had an interest in Greenland. During World War II, we signed an agreement with Denmark giving us access to the island as we battled the Germans for control of not just the minerals there, but the weather.
As the Cold War heated up and Soviet ICBMs threatened the US mainland, Greenland once again became important for early warning.
Now with sea ice retreating and Russia and China showing a deeper interest in the Arctic region, Greenland is back in the headlines, and seemingly, the US’ crosshairs. President Trump made a push to gain complete control of Denmark’s autonomous territory, but later backed off as a new framework came into focus.
In this video, we go through the history, geographic significance, and current status of Greenland and what the future might hold.
