If a fight breaks out in the Pacific, carriers will be at the center of any US response, but they might not be the giant supercarriers we all know and love.
The Marine Corps has been implementing an innovative concept where it deploys an entire Marine Attack Squadron of F-35B aircraft on board America-class amphibious assault ships along with 1,800 Marines to create a "Lightning Carrier."
These small and agile ships can extend the reach of the US Navy and Marine Corps and give Marines the firepower they need to seize or defend forward objectives, without having to rely on supercarriers.
Lightning Carriers have graduated from concept to becoming essential in the Marines’ approach to Force Design 2030 and their role in the Pacific, and today we talk about what these ships are capable of and what they aren’t.
