For nearly two decades, Israel has eschewed making strategic choices in dealing with the terrorist groups that surround it, relying instead on deterrence to minimize their threat while tolerating their presence. That approach failed on Oct. 7. Currently, Israel appears to be prioritizing the operational objective of clearing Hamas from Gaza. But it cannot afford to avoid grappling with the question of what that failure of deterrence means for its future security.

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is a longstanding and deeply complex issue that has seen numerous escalations, including the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip. To better understand how Israel conducts its operations in Gaza and the challenges it faces, let’s delve into the recent developments and the strategies employed.

Halloween is fast approaching and for anyone stuck in the barracks or waiting to hand out candy, it’s a good time to put on a spooky movie. There are the classics, the Universal Monster movies or the original Halloween, but there’s also a surprisingly deep amount of horror films set within the military. Maybe soldiers as protagonists require the monsters and killers to be tougher. Maybe it adds to the sense of dread in each movie. Maybe it’s a good reason to involve Nazis as expendable bad guys in supernatural or sci-fi settings.
The US Department of Defense announced on Friday that the government was moving forward with the development of a new version of the B61 nuclear gravity bomb.
The bomb called the B61-13, would have a similar performance to the B61-7 and would replace some of those older gravity bombs, the Pentagon said in its announcement. The performance of the B61-7 is greater than that of the B61-12, the most recent bomb added to the military arsenal.
The Pentagon said the decision to build this weapon was made to reflect the changing security environment in line with the 2022 Nuclear Posture Review.

Israel said that it is “expanding” its ground operations in the Gaza Strip, sending infantry and tanks into the northern part of Gaza. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his government did not say that a large-scale ground invasion was happening, but said that Israel was entering a “second stage of the war.
Israel announced that the war with Hamas had entered a “new phase,” with its infantry maintaining operations in Gaza instead of withdrawing after the raid.
“The ground in Gaza is shaking. We attack both ground and underground targets. The units have received very clear orders: continue to fight until further instructions,” Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said on October 28, after Israel deployed infantry to attack locally in the northern Gaza Strip the night before and had not yet withdrawn its troops.

Former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett explained to The New York Times his plan to defeat Hamas and avoid a bloodbath for both Israel and the civilian population of Gaza.
Bennett claims that an invasion of Gaza City would lead the IDF into a protracted, bloody war on unfamiliar terrain, in a variety of combat with which the modern IDF has little experience. The large number of casualties that would be expected from such a campaign would provoke widespread public pressure—both domestic and international—to bring the conflict to a premature conclusion.
The Israel Defense Forces say ground forces continue to operate in the northern Gaza Strip, killing Hamas gunmen and destroying sites belonging to the terrorist group.
The IDF says troops killed several Hamas gunmen who opened fire on ground forces in the Strip and other identified terrorists on Gaza beach near the community of Zikim in southern Israel.
According to the IDF, ground troops, including tanks, also attacked Hamas-guided missile positions, anti-tank positions, observation posts and other infrastructure.
Israel’s relatively small but highly effective naval force often operates inconspicuously during major Israel Defense Forces (IDF) operations in Gaza. Nevertheless, it significantly enhances the country’s defense capabilities.
Established in 1948, the Israeli Navy (IN) presently operates various surface ships, including corvette-sized vessels, which serve in roles such as air defense, maritime interdiction, missile attack platforms, patrols, and port security. The IN also operates two classes of submarines, and it is widely believed to possess a second-strike nuclear capability.
The latest contracts for the F-35 and F-15EX fighter planes have been a topic of discussion recently, and they come with varying price tags. As of October 27, 2023, the cost of an F-15EX Eagle II is approximately $90 million for each aircraft in the second production batch. This is about $7.5 million more than the most recent price of the F-35A, according to sources in the defense industry.
The U.S. Air Force has confirmed the contract for the next three production batches of the Boeing-manufactured F-15EX, marking an important milestone for the program.

Subsidiaries PIT-RADWAR and Wojskowe Zakłady Elektroniczne of the Polish Armament Group have signed additional contracts with the Norwegian consortium Kongsberg Defense & Aerospace (KDA) for the construction and delivery of two Naval Missile Units, as well as for the maintenance and production of NSM missiles.
The American company RTX yesterday, on October 26, released an official message, which states that its Raytheon division, together with the Israeli company Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, agreed to build a production facility that will manufacture Tamir missiles and its American variant SkyHunter for the Iron Dome system (Iron Dome).
In total, the companies should invest 33 million dollars in creating new production facilities.
The US has announced its intention to create a new variant of the B61 nuclear free-fall bomb, which is the main type of nuclear munitions for the Air Force. And for the bomb, developed in 1963, this will already be the thirteenth version.
The decision to create a new bomb has already received a “green light” from the administration of the US president because it “reflects the changing security situation and growing threats from potential adversaries.
