Will the Iran War doom the GOP in 2028? – The Iran War is not only historically unpopular, but it doesn’t appear it will end anytime soon, with its current stalemate very likely extending into 2027. As a result, Iran is likely to emerge as a live issue in the 2028 presidential campaign.
What effect will Iran have on 2028? With that election more than two years away, it’s likely way too early to say for sure. But it raises fascinating questions in both parties.

Yesterday’s unannounced whirlwind visit by US CIA Director John Ratcliffe has taken on new significance after another report late today, 26 August.
The crux of the story is that Russian President Vladimir Putin is increasingly desperate – so much so that he may resort to using a tactical nuclear weapon against Ukraine.

Authorities say 24-year-old Chad Williams opened fire at the In-N-Out Burger in Twin Falls, Idaho on Aug. 1, 2026. Tragically, three people were killed and seven others were wounded. But the casualty count might have been much higher if not for the heroic actions of bystanders who helped evacuate the area and render first aid to victims.
One bystander who stood out was Jordan Salinas, an armed, private citizen, who engaged the shooter.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree allowing the state to take control of “critical infrastructure” amid ongoing attacks by Ukraine.
Putin signed the decree on Monday, 24th August, authorizing the Russian government to temporarily run key infrastructure sites across the country that have been subjected to drone assaults by Kyiv.
In recent months, Ukraine has targeted oil and gas refineries, as well as transport, communications and logistics facilities in a bid to disrupt the Russian war effort, subsequently bringing the conflict close to home for everyday Russians.
Ukraine struck a Wildberries logistics hub in the Russian city of Kotovsk, about 310 miles southeast of Moscow in the Tambov region, early Wednesday, according to regional officials and multiple news outlets.
The strike killed at least three people across a broader wave of drone attacks that night and, according to Tambov Governor Yevgeny Pervyshov, “completely” destroyed the warehouse.

“Unthreatening and respectful.” That is how the president of the United States described North Korea on Aug. 16, 2026, in his social media post ordering his secretary of defense to scale back joint exercises with South Korea. Two years earlier in Seoul, the U.S.-South Korean alliance agreed that South Korea’s role in an American nuclear operation would involve exercises and training, formalizing those guidelines at a Nuclear Consultative Group meeting co-chaired by Vipin Narang, then-acting assistant secretary of defense for space policy.

Russia and China are rapidly developing capabilities that could challenge the long-standing American lead in space, with recent advances in satellite constellations and reusable rockets highlighting the accelerating competition. The Washington Post recently pointed to two developments in particular: Russia’s rapid deployment of its Rassvet low-Earth-orbit satellite network and China’s successful recovery of the first stage of its Zhuque-3 reusable rocket. Both developments address capabilities that have become central to America’s increasingly commercialised space architecture.
A senior Norwegian commander has warned that Western societies are fundamentally unprepared for a prolonged conflict on the scale and intensity of the war in Ukraine. Brigadier Atle Molde, who commands the Norway-led Task Force Legio responsible for training Ukrainian military personnel, recently warned: “We are not prepared. No Western country’s prepared.” He described avoiding a prolonged war of attrition as one of the most important lessons Norway and other Western countries should draw from Ukraine.

Iran looks to be reasserting control over the Strait of Hormuz, with Iranian forces turning around an oil tanker attempting to use the U.S.-backed southern shipping corridor on Wednesday – just as Washington signals that it has no immediate intention to resume military strikes against Iran.
The incident, which involved the HAANA, an Indian-managed tanker, comes only a day after Iran and Oman announced that they had made progress toward agreeing on a new temporary shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed three classified decrees this week, just as CIA Director John Ratcliffe made a highly unusual trip to Moscow. Even after the U.S. official returned from Russia, the purpose of the trip remains a mystery.
Ratcliffe remained in Moscow for roughly eight hours, and the Kremlin confirmed that he met with Russian intelligence officials. U.S. President Donald Trump also acknowledged the visit but rejected some of the most dramatic theories about why he was there.

The world’s first hypersonic glide vehicle capable of air-to-air engagements is reportedly currently under development in China, and is expected to extend China’s ability to attack high value support aircraft and bombers at unprecedented ranges and with a minimal warning time. This will build on the advantages provided by the PL-17 air-to-air missile, which is currently the longest ranged in the world, with hypersonic glide vehicles having significant advantages in terms of speed, flight performance, and efficiency.
A Marine injured by a suicide bomb outside Abbey Gate at the Kabul airport tended to other Marines and provided cover in the wake of the attack. Later that night, he sat in his room digging shrapnel out of his own hip. Weeks after U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said an Oman-Iran deal on the Strait of Hormuz was imminent, the two countries appear to be moving closer to confirming an agreement that would establish a new system for moving traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.
But statements from Tehran on Wednesday, August 26, suggest that the waterway will remain restricted for some time, unless Washington agrees to its terms.

Six months of military strikes and threats have so far failed to force Iran to capitulate. A naval blockade hasn’t worked, either, and now the Trump administration is counting on a new economic pressure campaign to bring the Islamic regime into line and agree to end its nuclear program and open the Strait of Hormuz.
Washington is threatening virtually any country, company, individual or financial institution doing business with Iran – but there’s a problem.

Remembrances and condolences flooded in Tuesday after the death of country music legend Dolly Parton.
Parton, who died of cancer at the age of 80 in her home state of Tennessee, was so multidimensional that one label wasn’t nearly enough to define her. The 5-foot-tall dynamo was much more than a singer. Songwriter. Actor. Philanthropist. Successful theme-park developer. Author.
Another label applies as well: military supporter.
The war between the U.S. and Iran has been in something of a holding pattern for the last two months. The war hasn’t consisted of daily shooting or bombing since July, but there isn’t quite peace either, as the sides remain at a standoff, and no full-on peace talks are scheduled.
According to one shipping boss, it’s starting to look like the Russia-Ukraine war, in which the front lines haven’t moved much recently. While the analogy isn’t exact, some similarities remain.

What’s the status of the talks between Iran and Oman over the Strait of Hormuz? The negotiations were reportedly nearing a deal two weeks ago, but no such agreement has been announced — and last week, President Donald Trump was threatening to bomb Oman, a U.S. ally, if it didn’t cooperate.
Now, Iran has reportedly made a new demand.
