Earlier this year, Sweden promised Archer artillery systems to Ukraine. Now, video shows the system in action. Each Archer system can fire a series of rounds in rapid succession, allowing a single gun to achieve “time on target,” synchronized effects like a whole battery.
These synchronized shots do greater damage to defenders than other barrages, but Ukraine faces a larger problem right now. Their soldiers must ration artillery ammunition as the West struggles to produce what is needed. The Archer, for all of its capabilities, cannot change that. For now, only Congress can likely do so.

A Taiwanese pilot, allegedly planning to defect to the People’s Republic of China (PRC), was reportedly offered $15 million USD to deliver a CH-47 Chinook helicopter to the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN). As part of the defection scheme, the individual was supposedly set to land the Chinook on a PLAN vessel in the Taiwan Strait. Along with the money offered, the pilot was also apparently assured by Chinese officials that his family would be given safe passage out of Taiwan should a potential conflict between the country and China erupt.

The U.S. Navy has provided what appears to be the first look at a new underwater drone called Yellow Moray that can be launched and recovered via a standard submarine torpedo tube. The uncrewed system recently completed its first end-to-end test. The service hopes to begin fielding this capability next year, which will give all of its submarines an additional tool for scouting for mines and other hazards, gathering intelligence, and otherwise improving their situational awareness.

One of the great strengths of the Roman army was its ability to evolve over time — tactically, strategically, and technologically. Anything that could give its soldiers an extra edge on the battlefield was enthusiastically embraced, and as the enemies they fought changed over time, so too did the kit of the typical infantry soldier.
The gladius sword was a perfect example of this — but it too was abandoned once it no longer offered the advantages in combat it once had, in favor of the long-bladed spatha sword.

The National Museum of the United States Air Force (NMUSAF) has just completed its full restoration of the Boeing X-32A, the loser to Lockheed’s X-35 in the Joint Strike Fighter competition nearly two and a half decades ago. The museum took custody of the X-32A, the only one on Earth, back in 2005.

Outer space is infinite, but the parts of space most important to life on Earth are becoming increasingly congested. Satellites vital for infrastructure, economy, and security are filling up the thousands of miles above the Earth’s surface. With this crowding comes an increase in close approaches between satellites, placing communications, navigation, weather monitoring, missile warning, and other satellites at risk. There are many reasons to fear close approaches — also known as conjunctions — in space, even if they are accidental.
