Headlines would lead one to conclude that the age of killer robots has arrived. In Ukraine, autonomous drone swarmssupposedly hunt for enemies and independently decide what to attack. Because Ukraine and Russia are employing many different types of drones, which are omnipresent over the frontlines, some observers have concluded that drones have fundamentally changed the character of war and are the key factor that will decide who prevails in the conflict.

The conversation is based on Charlie’s most recent book, Isolationism: A History of America’s Efforts to Shield Itself from the World.

The U.S. Coast Guard says it is planning to buy an existing commercial icebreaker to help support operations in the highly strategic Arctic region, a possibility that has been discussed since at least 2015. This comes as work on a new class of Polar Security Cutter heavy icebreakers for the Coast Guard has suffered substantial delays, with the first of those ships now potentially not set to be delivered until 2028. The service currently only has one operational heavy icebreaker, the USCGC Polar Star, which is becoming increasingly difficult to operate and maintain.

The U.S. military has always had menu options, although no one expects a five-star buffet. But when your leadership tells you to cut those ties and bust open a Meal, Ready-To-Eat (MRE) box after a long day in the field, you can expect that you are now entering the Hunger Games.

Following the first sighting of one of the 31 U.S.-supplied M1A1 Abrams main battle tanks in action on the front lines in Ukraine, as well as the confirmation of a first loss of the type, more evidence is coming to light of the tank being used in combat — and a second combat loss. The photo below, purportedly originating from the village of Berdychi, in the eastern Donetsk region, shows the Ukrainian M1 in question, after it shed its track, apparently when it ran over a mine.

Signs are growing that the U.S. Air Force is about to conduct another live-fire test of its AGM-183A Air-launched Rapid Response Weapon hypersonic missile, or ARRW, but this time staged from Guam.
Last week, the service showed off a live AGM-183A under the wing of a B-52H bomber at Andersen Air Force Base on the highly strategic U.S. Pacific island territory, stating it was there for show and tell of sorts with deployed B-52 crews.
The Italian Navy has become the latest participant in the naval protection force in the Red Sea to shoot down a Houthi drone or missile. The incident over the weekend came as Houthi officials vowed to continue their attacks on shipping in the region and celebrated the sinking of the first merchant vessel since their campaign began in response to Israel’s operation against Hamas in Gaza following the group’s October 7th attacks on Israel.
The Italian Navy Andrea Doria class destroyer Caio Duilio engaged a Houthi drone on Saturday, shooting it down at a relatively close range of four miles.

In a global geopolitical and economic context of ever-increasing uncertainty, Asia-Pacific’s defence spending growth in 2024 is, at first glance at least, remarkably pedestrian – even subdued. With a significant proportion of the region’s budgets published at least in draft form, military expenditure in Asia in the year is expected to have risen to USD603.9 billion.
This represents a nominal rise of 4.9% but is just 2.1% larger after the effects of inflation are taken into account.
“It is clear that the main element of any United States policy toward the Soviet Union,” George Kennan wrote in 1947, “must be that of long-term, patient but firm and vigilant containment of Russian expansive tendencies.” When Kennan devised this famous sentence, he did not only have Europe in mind: Asia and the Middle East were catalysts of early Cold War contestation. Soviet expansive tendencies proceeded from the universal sway of communism and from the legacy of the Russian empire, which had been active in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.
