Every year, tons of military supplies are labeled as “surplus” by the U.S. military, and these can be anything from rucksacks to rocket launchers. But when weapons or weapons systems are slapped with a surplus label, there’s an entire process in place for de-weaponizing them.
During the U.S. military’s post-Cold War drawdown, the process was so overwhelmed by surplus gear that some weapons-grade surplus managed to trickle through. That’s how Ron Garlick was able to rebuild one of the Army’s deadly Cobra helicopters and use it to hunt wolves.

Anatomy of a Modern Decapitation Strike
Imagine if you will, a low-cost, small weapons system. It could fly stealthily into enemy territory, not being mistaken for a bomber or any kind of missile. And then it could detonate a nuclear weapon onboard, hitting a desired target. That system? A balloon.
Back in the 1950s military researchers seriously explored using free floating balloons as a way to launch nuclear bombs at enemies.
The idea was taken seriously enough by the United States government that nuclear researchers did a formal study on it.
On New Year’s Eve 1876, in a dusty little settlement on the Texas frontier, three Medal of Honor recipients ended up at the same party.
By sunrise, one of them was dead.
A double-barreled shotgun blast ended the life of Adam Paine, a Black Seminole scout who had earned the medal for fearless service on the Texas frontier. The man who pulled the trigger, Claron A. Windus, had his own Medal of Honor for equally selfless service. When Windus shot Paine, it became the only documented time in American history that one Medal of Honor recipient intentionally killed another.

When I look back at my 45 years of military service, one of the highlights of my military education was a battlefield tour I participated in during 2001 at the Somme battlefield, alongside other “high flying” students on the U.K.’s Higher Command and Staff course. The historical element of it was provided by the late Richard Holmes and we students reveled in his masterful narrative history. Holmes explained how the tank had been fielded in 1916 as a predominantly infantry protection platform to provide cover for troops as they moved across no-man’s land.
In 2025, the ongoing contest between the United States and China moved from tariff skirmishes to a confrontation over strategic choke points.Washington expanded semiconductor export controls under the Biden administration, limiting China’s access to advanced chips, design software, and lithography tools. The Trump administration tightened these rules on Sept. 29, extending them to foreign affiliates. Beijing retaliated ten days later with new licensing requirements on rare-earth oxides, metals, and magnet products.

World War II forced the United States into a lot of unfamiliar territory. Nowhere was that more apparent than in its fight against sabotage and espionage along the East Coast. The government discovered that safeguarding the waterfront required more than patrols and paperwork; it required access to communities it did not control. The crowded piers, ethnic neighborhoods, and dockside taverns around New York Harbor were governed not by federal agencies, but by powerful crime syndicates whose influence reached far deeper than any official badge.
The Saturday attack on Venezuela to capture President Nicolás Maduro was carried out by U.S. Army special operations units, who inserted via helicopter into Caracas and grabbed Maduro and his wife after a firefight with Venezuelan forces. While they were carrying out the raid, roughly 150 aircraft covered them in the skies and carried out airstrikes on Caracas and other parts of Venezuela.
The force included a mix of Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps bombers, fighter jets and electronic attack planes, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine said on Saturday.
Not all oil is created equal, and Venezuelan crude is about as different from typical American light oil as heavy molasses is from a bottle of gasoline. That difference shapes everything from how refineries are built to how much it costs to turn crude into fuel to whether U.S. companies even want those barrels in the first place.

North Korea has launched a nuclear-capable ballistic missile with a hypersonic glide vehicle from Pyongyang’s Ryokpho District, which traveled 1,000 kilometers before hitting a target in the Sea of Japan. State media noted that the test represented an operational evaluation of the country’s strategic weapons, which was framed as a show of force hours after the United States launched an attack on Venezuela and abducted its president, Nicolas Maduro.
Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council and former president Dmitry Medvedev has warned that the U.S. attack on Venezuela on January 3 and abduction of President Nicolas Maduro have demonstrated the need for potential targets of Western attacks to focus on strengthening their defensive capabilities. “The operation in Caracas has become the best proof of the fact that any state needs to strengthen its armed forces as much as possible, preventing various rich brazen individuals from easily changing the constitutional order in search of oil or something else,” he observed.

A number of thoughtful observers argued President Donald Trump would not pursue regime change in Venezuela. I was never convinced. On our podcast and in private conversations with experts and political leaders alike, I have been predicting that he would go for it. I also thought it was a bad idea, and I still think so.After a U.S. snatch-and-grab operation of Nicolás Maduro, who ruled Venezuela as a dictator, under the cover of a night of airstrikes, the question has been answered.

Delta Force and soldiers with the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment were involved in the operation to capture Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife in the early hours of Saturday, Task & Purpose has learned.

The US has overthrown the regime of Venezuelan President Maduro in a dramatic pre-dawn raid over the capital Caracas.
The “Russian Shield” over Caracas, Venezuela’s vaunted air defense, was supposed to be an iron dome, one that would put the United States to shame and sink their ships. But at 0400 EST on January 3, 2026, the U.S. Navy turned it into red-hot scrap metal.
For a decade, the defense blogs and twittersphere have been doom-posting about the S-300VM “Antey-2500.” They told us the Caribbean was a kill zone.
