In 36 BCE, Chinese troops from the ruling Han Dynasty launched a preemptive strike against a group of Xiongnu, a nomadic tribe from Central Asia, at a fortress in what is now Kazakhstan. Zhizhi, their leader, had 13,000 troops holed up in a fortress which was much further West than Chinese armies had ever marched before.

Determined not to let disability define him, he fought for independence in ways the public rarely saw. One of the most meaningful expressions of that independence was his love for driving. His cars were more than vehicles.
For years, the Army leaned heavily on bonuses to keep the force staffed. Those who served during the 2022–2023 recruiting crisis probably remember the wave of incentives, record enlistment bonuses, quick-ship payouts, and the urgent push to fill training seats.
But as the Army moves deeper into 2025, the service has quietly shifted direction. Instead of leading with money, it’s leading with options: career flexibility. Assignment preference. Paths that let soldiers shape not just how long they serve, but what their service actually looks like.

On January 11 Chinese state media published new footage showing the first test flight of the J-20 fifth generation fighter, making 15 years since the event in January 2011. A ceremony marking the event, and a never before seen large crowd from the Chengu Aerospace Corporation which was responsible for the aircraft’s development, were seen. The J-20 currently serves as China’s most capable air superiority fighter type, and has been in service for nine years, with procurement rates far exceeding those by the U.S.
Chinese Exercises Pit J-16 Long Range Fighters Against French Rafales in Simulated Air-to-Air Combat
A China Central Television (CCTV) broadcast has provided insight into a simulation launched by the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Air Force in which J-16 fighter aircraft engage French Rafale fighters in air-to-air combat. The wargame exploded a range of air combat scenarios, including computer-assisted exercises aimed at exploring now tactics. The exercise one of several held in the Xuchang, Henan Province, in central China, and was attended by approximately 20 units from across the armed forces and various academies.
January 11, 2026, marks 15 years since the maiden flight of the J-20 fifth generation fighter, which represents one of the most significant milestones in the country’s emergence as one of the world’s two industry leaders in fighter aviation. The J-20’s first flight in early 2011 was wholly unanticipated among Western analysts, with China having introduced its first fully indigenous fourth generation fighter, the J-10, into service just five years prior.

The Pentagon has launched a formal review of the “effectiveness” of women in ground-combat positions, nearly a decade after the Department of Defense ended a ban that had excluded them from front-line infantry, armor and artillery units.
The six-month assessment, first reported by NPR on Tuesday, will require Army and Marine Corp leaders to submit data on readiness, training, performance, casualties and command climate of ground combat units and personnel, according to a December memo sent by Undersecretary of Defense for Personnel Anthony Tata.

American and Jordanian forces carried out airstrikes on more than three dozen Islamic State targets in Syria today, in the second wave of bombardments retaliating for the killing of American soldiers last month.
U.S. Central Command confirmed the airstrikes late this afternoon, saying that a large force of more than a dozen aircraft bombed dozens of ISIS targets “across Syria,” firing more than 90 munitions. The operation included American F-15E Strike Eagles, A-10 Warthog close attack planes, AC-130J gunships and MQ-9 Reaper drones.

On the morning of June 6, 1944, thousands of Allied soldiers waited anxiously inside landing craft as they approached the beaches of Normandy. German artillery thundered overhead, machine guns swept the shoreline, and steel obstacles rose from the surf like jagged teeth.
Long before most American troops could step onto French soil, a small group of U.S. Navy sailors entered the water first. Their mission was not to fight the enemy directly but to remove the deadly barriers that stood between the sea and victory.

When Americans think of World War II, images of Normandy, Iwo Jima, Guadalcanal, and Midway dominate the national memory.
Few recall that the war also reached the soil of the United States itself, not in Hawaii alone, but on the cold, windswept islands of Alaska. Yet in 1942, Imperial Japanese forces invaded and occupied American territory in the Aleutian Islands, marking the first foreign occupation of U.S. land since the War of 1812.

In the first week of January multiple reports emerged that the Saudi Defence Ministry was considering procuring Chinese JF-17 fighter aircraft under a deal valued at $4-6 billion, which would mark the first major procurement of non-Western fighters in the country’s history. Should the aircraft indeed be purchased, it would raise serious questions regarding both their role in the Royal Saudi Air Force, and how their capabilities would compare to other fighter types that are already in service.
Ukrainian Air Force officers have developed an entirely new clean sheet set of tactics to operate F-16 fighter aircraft in the country’s ongoing war effort against Russia. Highlighting the necessity of this, F-16 pilots and other officers have recently criticised the air combat tactics taught by NATO members as “unsuitable” for engagements with Russian forces, particularly singling out their limited suitability to operate in a theatre where Russia fields a particularly dense and capable ground-based air defence network.

Federal immigration agents boarded a cruise ship docked in Miami and detained a Coast Guard veteran earlier this week in what the veteran and his wife say was a case of mistaken identity.
Jose “Joey” Martinez and his wife, Tammy Verhas, were “dead asleep” in their room when federal agents dressed in all black burst into their room at around 6:30 a.m., the veteran recalled. It was about two hours before the Carnival Cruise Line guests were scheduled to disembark from the ship and go through customs in Miami, Florida.
The National Security Agency on Friday announced Tim Kosiba as its deputy director, nine months after the Trump administration axed his predecessor — reportedly at the behest of a far-right activist.

He was also the deputy director of the agency’s Commercial Solutions Center, among other cyber roles in the FBI and Naval Criminal Investigative Service.

The air across the Central Command area of responsibility this January feels heavy enough to wear. Women who have served in combat arms for the last decade say a new Pentagon-ordered review of their “effectiveness” is the latest frustrating chapter in what they say has been the theme of their careers: proving themselves capable in combat units on a daily basis. They worry that the Pentagon-wide review of the “effectiveness” of women in ground combat jobs ordered by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth could just be more of the same double standards and misinformation they live with every day.
