It’s early days, but the Trump administration’s approach to a post-President Nicolás Maduro Venezuela is quickly coming into focus. This is not externally imposed democracy building but a regime management project that relies on compliant regime insiders, the existing state security apparatus, and offshore coercive leverage. As I argued previously in these pages, removing the apex of an authoritarian pyramid does not dissolve the pyramid. What changes is who gets to set the terms for the people still holding it up.
Chinese official sources have provided the first confirmation of the J-10C fighter’s reported combat successes in the hands of the Pakistan Air Force, with the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense on January 12 stating that the aircraft shot down several adversary aircraft in an aerial engagement without suffering losses.
The latest estimates for the size of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy’s nuclear powered submarine fleet indicated that it has overtaken that of the Russian Navy in size, making it the second largest only to that of the United States Navy. A primary driver of this trend has been the large scale production of the Type 093B class attack submarine, of which 16 are estimated to have begun construction.
Russian state defence conglomerate Rostec reported that the Su-35S has destroyed more targets in air-to-air combat than any other fighter type in the Russian Armed Forces. A statement by Rostec’s press office stressed that the Su-35 remains one of the most actively employed fighters in the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian War, highlighting that its advanced avionics including its electronic warfare and defensive suites in particular were major factors that led it to earn high praise from pilots.

The Army tapped a research and development company to create software that can identify and analyze “unpredictable” artificial intelligence behavior to ensure its AI-enabled systems are trustworthy, according to an award notice posted Thursday.
Army Contracting Command awarded an other transaction agreement worth approximately $6.3 million to Advanced Technology International, Inc. as the “managing prime” to Battelle Memorial Institute, for technology that can evaluate potential risks associated with AI-enabled autonomous systems and their models.
The Pentagon is officially ditching height and weight tables in favor of using a waist-to-height ratio to estimate troops’ body fat, according to an official memo released on Monday. And to pass, a service member’s waist measurement can be only slightly more than half of their height.
The method will divide the measurement of a service member’s waist circumference by their height to estimate body fat percentage.
The new body fat standards are between 18% and 26% for men and between 26% and 36% for women, according to a Dec.

Sen. Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.) asked a federal judge on Monday to immediately quash Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s plan to launch an investigation of the senator aimed at reducing his retired military rank and pension. In a lawsuit filed in federal court, Kelly said Hegseth was pursuing legal action to “signal to retired service members” that they could face “retaliation” for speaking out against Pentagon policies.

When President Trump referenced America’s ability to “darken” parts of Caracas during Operation Absolute Resolve, the comment stood out not because of what it confirmed, but because of what it implied. Delivered without technical detail, the remark hinted at capabilities that sit somewhere between diplomacy and force, and between cyber operations and traditional military action.
Whether or not the statement reflected a specific technical action in the raid on Venezuela is almost beside the point.

Anyone who’s ever deployed can tell you there’s more to worry about in the field than just the enemy. While of course the North Vietnamese were the primary concern of American troops in the Vietnam War, just being in the jungle presented an entirely unexpected series of its own challenges… like giant centipedes.

This past week American and Jordanian forces carried out the second wave of a new campaign of major airstrikes against Islamic State fighters in Syria. Operation Hawkeye Strike so far has involved a range of aircraft ranging from fighter jets to close-air support planes.
And one of the aircraft that took part in the ongoing operation is “Samus.” Yes, as in Samus from the “Metroid” game series. Except this Samus isn’t a space-based bounty hunter in a power suit, it’s an A-10 Thunderbolt II — better known as a Warthog — that goes “brrrrrt.”

As the Allied war effort in Europe balanced on the knife’s edge of history in the spring of 1944, the fate of nations hinged not only on armies, airpower, and logistics, but on silence. The invasion of Nazi-occupied France, known as Operation Overlord, was the most complex and heavily guarded military operation ever conceived. Every detail, from troop movements to weather forecasts, was cloaked in layers of deception and secrecy. Within this tense atmosphere, even a careless word could undo years of planning and cost tens of thousands of lives.

On Apr. 7, 1945, aircraft from the U.S. Navy’s fast carrier task force sank the largest battleship ever built, the Imperial Japanese Navy’s Yamato. Escorted by the light cruiser Yahagi and eight destroyers, Yamato was on its way to Okinawa. It was intended to be a one-way trip: Yamato was expected to beach and use its guns as a coastal battery against the U.S. invasion fleet. Its approach was detected by American submarines and signals intelligence. Eleven U.S. aircraft carriers launched almost 300 aircraft. Over about two hours, Yamato was hit more than 15 times by torpedoes and bombs.
The United Kingdom Ministry of Defence has launched a competition to rapidly develop a ground-launched short ranged ballistic missiles to re-equip the Ukrainian Army underProject Nightfall, which was first publicly announced on January 11. The project builds on an earlier early engagement notice in August 2025 outlining requirements for cost-effective ballistic missiles, and could complement Ukraine’s other ballistic and cruise missile development programs including the indigenous Flamingo subsonic cruise missile program with a 3000 kilometre range.
Following its introduction into service in December 2025, a growing number of assessments have been published in the Western world regarding the capabilities of the Russian Oreshnik ballistic missile, which is the first with an intermediate range to have been introduced in Europe since the 1980s. The missile has been combat tested twice in the Ukrainian theatre, the first time in late 2024 when its development was first announced, and the second time on January 8 in a major show of force aimed at targets the Lviv region near Ukraine’s western borders.

White House Spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt amplified claims about American special forces super-soliders deployed advanced weaponry during the extraction phase of former Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro.
Leavitt reposted an alleged account from a Venezuelan security guard at Maduro’s compound describing what happened when Delta Force operators descended from helicopters in pitch-black conditions. This account was originally posted on X by California-based political activist Mike Netter, who is seeking to recall left-wing Governor Gavin Newsom.

In 36 BCE, Chinese troops from the ruling Han Dynasty launched a preemptive strike against a group of Xiongnu, a nomadic tribe from Central Asia, at a fortress in what is now Kazakhstan. Zhizhi, their leader, had 13,000 troops holed up in a fortress which was much further West than Chinese armies had ever marched before.

For years, the Army leaned heavily on bonuses to keep the force staffed. Those who served during the 2022–2023 recruiting crisis probably remember the wave of incentives, record enlistment bonuses, quick-ship payouts, and the urgent push to fill training seats.
But as the Army moves deeper into 2025, the service has quietly shifted direction. Instead of leading with money, it’s leading with options: career flexibility. Assignment preference. Paths that let soldiers shape not just how long they serve, but what their service actually looks like.
