Ukraine Launches Massive Drone Attack On Russian Oil Facilities – Kyiv is pushing ahead with its strike campaign against Russian oil and energy infrastructure in defiance of Washington’s instruction to cease the attacks, launching one of its largest-ever drone strikes overnight into Sunday, October 18. The overnight assault involved more than 1,000 drones, according to Russian officials, and caused major fires throughout St. Petersburg, Russia’s second-largest city.

Trump’s Approval Plummets as Democrats Gain Ground – President Donald Trump’s approval rating has fallen to its lowest level in either of his two terms in the White House, with new national polling showing only 33% of Americans approve of his performance. The polls also show 66% of Americans disapprove.

Yemen’s Ansarallah Coalition has claimed to have struck a Royal Saudi Air Force Eurofighter over northern Yemen with a surface-to-air missile, reportedly damaging the aircraft severely enough to put it at risk of crashing. The group’s military spokesperson, Brigadier General Yahya Saree, announced the attack on October 14, stating that the aircraft had taken off from Taif Air Base in western Saudi Arabia before being engaged over Saada Governorate. Coalition-affiliated media subsequently released footage purporting to show the missile engagement and an explosion close to the aircraft.

Russia’s defence sector has modernised approximately 80 per cent of the systems and equipment aboard its Tu-160 strategic bomber, according to Yuri Abrosimov, general director of Tupolev, as part of the Tu-160M program. “Outside, the Tu-160M has kept that same recognisable silhouette, but inside it was created on an entirely new technological base with active use of digital technologies. 80% of the systems and equipment were modernised,” said Abrosimov.

The U.S. Air Force has successfully demonstrated an F-22 fifth generation  fighter controlling an YFQ-44A Fury unmanned fighter in flight for the first time, marking a major milestone in efforts to integrate autonomous aircraft into future manned combat formations. According to the Air Force, the F-22 pilot acted as an airborne “quarterback,” issuing high-level tactical directives to the drone. Fury’s onboard autonomy software interpreted and executed the commands in real time, conducting dynamic flight manoeuvres and simulated combat tasks.

A spokesperson for Nellis Air Force Base confirmed that a service member assigned to the 6th Combat Training Squadron, Detachment 2 died from injuries sustained in a fall ahead of the University of Texas San Antonio and Naval Academy game at the Alamodome in San Antonio. 
The incident happened during a pregame rappelling demonstration ahead of UTSA’s annual Salute to Armed Forces & Veterans game.

Iranian Attacks in Hormuz Reach Record Highs – After a period of elevated oil exports out of the Middle East, with Washington touting some daily averages higher than pre-war levels, Iranian attacks on commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz have now reached record highs. Maritime security data shows that strikes on tankers and cargo vessels have reached their highest levels since the United States and Israel launched the first strikes against Iran in February.

Russia Leaves One Million Ukrainians Without Power – Russia’s attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure continue, with the latest round of Russian attacks killing at least eight people, injuring dozens, and leaving more than one million people without any electricity. Moscow appears to be intensifying its campaign against Ukrainian civilian infrastructure, with strikes on October 16 targeting shopping malls and industrial facilities as well as critical energy infrastructure.

The Department of Defense failed to fully secure unclassified wireless communications, allowing sensitive data including locations of troops and command facilities vulnerable to be exposed, the Pentagon’s watchdog found.

The U.S. Army has outlined plans to sustain a prolonged high-intensity conflict in the Western Pacific, with a new warfighting guidance document emphasising forward-deployed forces, hardened infrastructure, pre-positioned weapons stockpiles and long-range missile deployments along the First Island Chain. A Russian military satellite has manoeuvred into an orbit that could allow it to approach a U.S.-registered commercial reconnaissance satellite providing intelligence support to Ukraine, raising concerns over the Russian Armed Forces’ potential ability to threaten Western space assets. To address growing concerns of cartel activity employing drones along the southern border, the Trump administration has shut down the airspace above the region to all unauthorized drone flights.

Over the last two weeks, there has been a ton of coverage of a potential lab leak in eastern Russia – a lab leak that could potentially expose the world to the pneumonic plague.
While many, many questions remain, and while the Russian government remains typically silent on answers, there is one thing that we know for sure – the first response to any potential pandemic is an immediate run on the drugs needed to keep people safe.

After traffic through the Strait of Hormuz briefly recovered in September, transit through the waterway has slowed back down to a crawl after renewed Iranian attacks against civilian vessels in the region.

The drop has further shaken an already volatile energy market, which has not yet fully adjusted to the war’s onset in the Middle East in February.

The Trump White House Descends Into Infighting – President Donald Trump’s White House is said to be descending into internal conflict as the Republican Party prepares for potentially devastating losses in the upcoming midterm elections, and with various members of the president’s staff embroiled in their own scandals.

After disagreements with Trump, disruptions to Starlink, and a general shortage of air defenses, Ukraine is currently vulnerable. Like a shark smelling blood in the water, Russia is capitalizing on Kyiv’s weakened position and has been increasing its attacks against the country’s energy infrastructure.

Unlike previous years, which relied heavily on strategic aviation and cruise missiles, Moscow’s most recent attacks have used drones, particularly the new jet-powered Geran-4 and Geran-5.
