Just 20 short years ago, China’s People’s Liberation Army Navy, or PLAN, was more of a brown-water navy that mostly kept close to its own shores and boasted just one refurbished Soviet hull as an aircraft carrier. Now, things are different.
The PLAN recently launched their first catapult-equipped super carrier, displacing about 80,000 tons and boasting three electromagnetic aircraft launch system catapults, or EMALS. This rivals USS Gerald R Ford with a displacement of 100,000 tons and four EMALS. This, combined with aircraft like the J-15, J-35, KJ-600, and GJ-11 gives China a legitimate carrier air wing.
But that isn’t all, they could also be working on a nuclear carrier, something only the US and France currently operate. There is also the Type 076 that has appeared with what looks like an EMALS tailored for drones, making this amphibious assault ship something of a drone carrier.
In this video, we break it all down and cover what pitfalls China could face and what the US is, or at least should be, concerned about.
