Most people might find the International Space Station’s crew quarters to be a little cramped, but not Marine Lt. Col. Jasmin Moghbeli, a NASA astronaut who returned in March from six months in space.
Each astronaut aboard the space station has his or her own room that is roughly the size of a telephone booth, said NASA spokeswoman Sandra Jones. All the astronauts also share a single toilet.
But when Moghbeli recounted her mission aboard the space station to members of her former unit earlier this month she described her accommodations in the most Marine Corps way possible.

China’s military is both corrupt and increasingly capable. Yesterday, the Pentagon released its 24th China Military Power Report since Congress initiated its mandate in 2000, offering revelations unavailable elsewhere. The document reveals new details of the most dramatic military buildup since World War II, ongoing challenges that Chairman Xi Jinping and his party army are addressing with determination, and context to interpret what it all means.

The fall of Bashar al-Assad is transforming not just Syria but also dynamics in the broader Middle East. What implications does this have for U.S. policy in the region? Should U.S. forces withdraw, or is there a continuing role for the American military in Syria? Melanie laments what appears to be the end of the road for Nippon Steel’s efforts to purchase U.S. Steel, Chris questions the panic around aircraft flying over New Jersey, and Zack grieves for South Korea after Yoon Suk Yeol’s disastrous martial law declaration.

During the Biden administration the military focused most of its efforts on diversity, equity, and inclusion rather than warfighting. Even that effort failed.
For the last two years, the Air Force recruited officer candidates based on skin color more than individual merit and failed to reach those goals in 2023 and 2024. The Department of the Air Force aimed to have officer applicants be 67.5% white, 13% Black, 10% Asian, 1.5% Native American and Native Alaskan, and 1% Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander. The non-white goals fell short between 0.5 and 5%.

The Defense Department is being directed by Congress to look into incidents of special operators reporting low levels of testosterone, a deficiency leading to a range of physical and mental health effects that this community has been dealing with on their own for years.
The health effects of lowered testosterone among special operations veterans have become so well-known in the community that many refer to it as “Operator Syndrome.”

In her final months as the Pentagon’s second permanent Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Officer, Dr. Radha Plumb and her team have been reshaping some of the hub’s directorates and acceleration cells to more quickly and strategically scale proven and experimental AI-enabled capabilities across the U.S. military at a pace that more closely matches real-world needs.
“The good news is it’s just a very natural evolution from what was already there,” Plumb told DefenseScoop Monday during an exclusive interview at the Pentagon.

On Monday, President-elect Donald Trump stated that he would consider reversing President Biden’s recent decision to allow U.S.-made ATACMS missiles to strike targets deep inside Russia. Calling the decision “stupid,” Trump also stated that he was unhappy about the fact he was not consulted prior to the decision.
“I don’t think that should have been allowed, not when there’s a possibility — certainly not just weeks before I take over,” Trump said during a news conference at his Mar-a-Lago resort.
