In the final years of the Cold War, the Soviet Navy tasked two of its Delta class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines, or SSBNs, to verify their capability to launch a full salvo of all of its 16 ballistic missiles at once. This was Operation Behemoth, and the results were, it has to be said, mixed.
The first attempt in 1989 ended in disaster when propellant and oxidizer leaked from one of the missiles and ignited in the launch tube; the resulting explosion destroyed the missile.

Ukraine says it has received “positive signals” from Poland that indicate that the NATO country is willing to supply Kyiv with the F-16 fighter jets that it’s long been campaigning to get. Meanwhile, Polish officials have confirmed that they could send some of their F-16s to Ukraine, although it would have to be done as part of a coordinated effort with other NATO allies. Moreover, the advanced capabilities of these jets, in particular, and Poland’s own need for them, appear to make such a transfer at least questionable.

The Army’s situational awareness tool collapsing various systems within the command post is operationally effective in its mission, according to the Pentagon’s weapon tester.
“Command Post Computing Environment (CPCE) Increment 1 is operationally effective in supporting commanders and staff with improved situational awareness and mission command,” the annual report from the Office of the Director, Operational Test and Evaluation stated.

The recent U.S. government’s decision to provide 31 M1A2 Abrams tanks to the Ukrainian military has been a very hot topic, even before the official announcement was made. There continue to be discussions about what these tanks will really offer Ukraine’s forces and about concerns that could they could be hard to operate and maintain, especially because of their complex and fuel-hungry gas turbine propulsion system. This all raises an interesting question about whether it might be possible to just fit them with a more traditional diesel internal combustion engine instead.

Brazil is to procure a new main battle tank (MBT), infantry fighting vehicle (IFV), and self-propelled howitzer(SPH), Janes learnt at Defence iQ’s International Armoured Vehicles (IAV) 2023 conference held in London from 23 to 26 January. It is seeking 36 wheeled SPHs.
At the same time, Brazil plans to upgrade 52 of its Leopard 1A1 tanks starting in 2023, with a request for proposals to be made in June.

Germany-based joint venture (JV) company EuroSpike has received an awarded from the Finnish armed forces for Spike anti-tank guided missiles.
EuroSpike is a JV between Rheinmetall Electronics, Diehl Defence, and Rafael Advanced Defense Systems. Rheinmetall holds a 40% stake in the JV.
The exact value of the contract has not been disclosed but it is said to be in the mid-double-digit million-euro range for Rheinmetall.

The missiles will supplement the country’s anti-tank capabilities and enhance the abilities of its anti-tank troops.

will be equipped with Cakir cruise missiles for longer-range targets.

Turkey’s Ares Shipyard has unveiled a new addition to its family of fast interception craft (FIC).

Based around a 32 m advanced composite hull, the new FIC comes in two variants, known as
ARES 32 Predator
and
ARES 32 Dagger
.

Both vessels are built to the same specifications, with a maximum speed of more than 45 kt, a range of 2,000 n miles, and the ability to operate in conditions up to Sea State 6.
