Ukraine will soon get a big boost to its armor arsenal as the U.S. will donate M2 Bradley Fighting Vehicles and Germany will provide Marder Infantry Fighting Vehicles to fight Russia’s all-out invasion.
U.S. President Joe Biden and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz made a joint announcement about the new aid Thursday.

The U.S. is expected to announce an aid package that includes Bradleys tomorrow, according to Air Force Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder, the Pentagon’s top spokesman.

The Army recently awarded a task order to Microsoft to start developing a better version of the Integrated Visual Augmentation System (IVAS) that is expected to improve how soldiers train and fight, the service announced Thursday.
The IVAS program is one of the Army’s highest-priority modernization initiatives for its soldier system portfolio. The technology includes a ruggedized augmented reality and heads-up display system based on Microsoft’s HoloLens 2 device.

Looking to further diversify its arsenal of commercial partners, the Army plans to prototype new biometrics, automated threat detection and other artificial intelligence-aligned emerging technologies specifically with small businesses that ordinarily do not compete for the service’s contracts.
Proposals from interested and applicable companies that aim to engage in this up-and-coming Army small business innovation research (SBIR) program will be accepted Jan. 10-31.

The U.S. Air Force’s newest HH-60W Jolly Green II combat search-and-rescue (CSAR) helicopters have been operating in east Africa on their first deployment. While specific locations haven’t been disclosed, recently released Defense Department photos nonetheless show the aircraft conducting exercises in the region.

A North Korean drone last week entered a no-fly zone around the office of the South Korean president, military officials in Seoul have confirmed. The North Korean unmanned aerial vehicle was one of five that crossed the border on December 26, in the first incident of its kind in five years, which you can read about in our previous coverage here.

Army Chief Information Officer Raj Iyer will be leaving the Defense Department in the coming weeks and going back to industry, he announced in a LinkedIn post late Wednesday night.
Iyer served as the first civilian CIO since the Army divided the chief information officer and deputy chief of staff, G6, roles.
“With the completion of my contract with the Army, it is now time for me to return to industry where I can take on the next big challenge,” he wrote.
