What do children’s bouncy castles have in common with modern warfare in Ukraine?
While the conflict has driven cutting-edge advances like drone technology, much older tactics are still proving effective. One of them is deception – using decoys to mislead the enemy, a technique that dates back to the First World War.
In this video, we speak to one of the world’s foremost experts on military deception about how inflatable dummy weapons are being used on today’s battlefield. A Russian drone video appears to show a Ukrainian M270 rocket launcher being destroyed – but the target was actually a low-cost inflatable decoy designed by Viktor Talanov.
Talanov began his career making inflatable sports equipment, hot-air balloons and even bouncy castles, before his skills were adopted by armed forces.
