Sgt. Maj. Carlos A. Ruiz, who went from being a warehouse clerk before a stint as a drill instructor, will become the Marine Corps’ principal enlisted leader and adviser to the commandant, Corps officials announced on Monday.
Ruiz has been picked to serve as the 20th Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps, starting on Aug. 8. He is currently the senior enlisted leader for U.S. Marine Corps Forces Reserve and U.S.

The U.S. Marine Corps says the development of a new family of relatively low-cost, long-range air-launched loitering munitions, or kamikaze drones, is “critical” to its new expeditionary and distributed concepts of operations. These future Long-Range Attack Munitions, or LRAMs, would be capable of operating in fully-networks swarms and reaching target areas more than a hundred miles away after launch from Marine Corps F-35B Joint Strike Fighters, MV-22B Osprey tilt-rotors, various types of helicopters, or even KC-130J Hercules tanker/transport planes.

The Ukrainian air forces have armed their Sukhoi Su-24M bombers with British-made Storm Shadow cruise missiles. A photo posted online on Friday shows one of the variable-wing supersonic bombers holding a pair of 1.5-tonne subsonic Storm Shadows under its wing bases.
An earlier photo had confirmed that Ukraine’s Su-24MR reconnaissance planes were carrying Storm Shadows. We now know that the two Su-24 variants in service in Ukraine have been modified to fire the stealthy 155-mile-range missile.

The Marine Corps has begun experimenting with a family of loitering, swarming munitions for attack helicopters that will give the service extra reach for future operations in the Indo-Pacific, according to the Corps’ latest update to its ongoing modernization efforts. 
The project — called the Long-Range Attack Munition — was revealed Monday in the annual update to Force Design 2030, which is an initiative spearheaded by Commandant Gen.

Former NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe James Stavridis warned on Saturday about the Chinese warship that nearly collided with a US Navy destroyer in the Taiwan Strait, saying such incidents could spark a war.
A video published by the Canadian outlet Global News, which was also widely shared on social media, showed how the Chinese ship approached the US Navy destroyer and passed within 150 meters of it. The rapprochement comes amid ongoing tensions between China and the United States over various issues, including the two countries’ stance on Taiwan independence.

German orders for new military hardware are expected to rise sharply this year, following long-standing criticism of inefficient and slow arms and hardware purchasing procedures, Germany’s procurement chief said on Monday.
Germany has been working to speed up its arms acquisition and increase ammunition supplies for the long term after a year of arms donations to Ukraine. However, progress in filling the gaps has been slow despite a special 100 billion euro fund set up by the government last year to pay for new weapons.

Fighters opposed to the Moscow government claim to have captured some Russian soldiers in Belgorod, near the border with Ukraine. The senior Belgorod official responded by saying that he had agreed to meet with the men’s captors if the soldiers were still alive.
But later, the fighters said the governor had “not found the courage” to meet with them and that they would hand over their captives to Ukraine. Russia has blamed Ukraine for the recent attacks on its border territories. Kyiv denies being directly involved.

The German government has promised to “immediately” shut down the training of Chinese fighter pilots by former German Luftwaffe aircrew, in the latest development involving former personnel from a variety of NATO nations assisting Beijing’s expanding airpower ambitions. The move comes after an exposé in the German media that provided details of how one particular former Luftwaffe officer — an ex-Eurofighter EF2000 pilot — had been recruited by China to share his expertise.
