The Navy on Monday moved into position to deploy unmanned underwater vehicles to help the Defense Department recover debris from China’s suspected surveillance balloon that was shot down on Saturday off the coast of South Carolina, according to the head of U.S. Northern Command.
Unsafe conditions at sea prevented explosive ordnance disposal teams from deploying the UUVs from a manned craft on Sunday, Gen. Glen VanHerck told reporters during a briefing on Monday.
“Today they’re on scene as of 10 o’clock Eastern this morning,” he said.

On a global scale, World War II was the largest and most intense single series of activities in human history to date. Trillions of dollars were spent in producing infrastructure and war material to sustain combat all across the world, from the Arctic Circle to Australia. Notable among the most challenging infrastructure projects completed by the Allied nations were two highway projects, one through the tropical jungles and highlands of northern Burma and southwest China, and another through the freezing tundra and icy mountains of western Canada and Alaska.
The 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine has prompted increased defense preparations across Western Europe. Many nations have increased spending and procurement to bring their forces up to date. Additionally, NATO nations have increased joint training operations to improve interoperability. Perhaps most notably, the Dutch Army announced that all three of its combat brigades would be integrated into the German Army.
Work email can be a pain. Specifically, no one likes it when that one coworker hits the “Reply All” button, whether on accident or on purpose, and starts blowing up inboxes unnecessarily. This is made even worse in the military when distribution lists includes thousands of people. In 2021, the Navy suffered a “Reply All” debacle when an email went out to the entire Bureau of Medicine and Surgery and one sailor “Replied All” asking to be removed from the distribution. In 2023, it’s the Army’s turn.

Since it was spotted by bystanders over the United States, the Chinese spy balloon has captured headlines and social media across the nation. First spotted on January 28, 2023, near the Aleutian Islands, the balloon transited over Alaska and Canada before floating over the continental United States over Idaho. It continued on a southeasterly path until it drifted over U.S. territorial waters off the coast of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where it was shot down by an F-22 Raptor stealth fighter on February 4.

The U.S. Air Force’s U-2S Dragon Lady spy planes were among the assets tapped to monitor and collect intelligence on a Chinese government surveillance balloon during its recent trip across parts of the continental United States and Canada. An F-22 Raptor stealth fighter finally shot down the balloon with an AIM-9X Sidewinder missile off the coast of South Carolina on Saturday, and efforts are now underway to recover the wreckage from the Atlantic Ocean.
