The largest NATO air exercise since the alliance’s founding in 1949 will be taking place this summer, and the U.S. Air National Guard (ANG) will be providing nearly half of the airpower slated to participate. As for how that show of force may be perceived by global threats like Russia as war rages on in Ukraine, senior ANG officials have said they can “take away whatever message they want.”
The expansive exercise has been dubbed Air Defender 2023 (AD23), and it’s scheduled to occur later this year between June 12-23.

In another incident involving ongoing border tensions, Armenia and Azerbaijan exchanged fire on Tuesday in the Nagorno-Karabakh region, which is an area contested by the two countries. The exchange of fire resulted in casualties for both sides.
On Tuesday, defense ministers from both countries released statements regarding the incident and each confirmed that troops had been killed in a clash near the disputed Lachin Corridor.

UAE defence technology conglomerate EDGE Group makes a move in the smart weapons domain as they sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Brazilian specialist, SAVITT on 13 April 2023.
Signed during the Latin American Defence and Security Exhibition (LADSE) 2023, the MoU provides a framework for the two companies to combine their expertise and explore potential collaboration opportunities to enhance technologies and capabilities in the UAE and Brazilian markets.
This follows another MoU signed on 12 April between EDGE Group and Condor, a leader in non-lethal technologies.

Norwegian forces have donated eight Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine, with the tanks arriving just before Easter. In recent weeks, Ukrainian personnel have been trained to use the tanks, with Norwegian forces teaching and practising alongside Ukrainian soldiers in Poland. 
According to Lieutenant-Colonel Palle Ydstebø at the Norwegian Defense Academy, the Ukrainian soldiers are learning to use the Leopard tanks quickly. This development is a positive sign for the upcoming spring offensive, which many expect to be critical in the ongoing conflict with Russia.

Defence Chiefs for countries in the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF) met in Helsinki on 12 April 2023 to discuss how they can best respond to the current security crises going forward. The meeting was hosted by Finland’s Chief of Defence, General Timo Kivinen. The UK Chief of the Defence, Staff Admiral Sir Tony Radakin attended the meeting.
A range of topics were discussed: the Baltic Sea and the High North security, the future development of the joint force and the groups’ commitment to wider regional stability.
