As a second major hurricane in as many weeks barrels towards the southern United States, the Pentagon has been tasked with pre-staging high-water vehicles and helicopters for both search and rescue and transporting relief supplies and troops in central Florida after Hurricane Milton.
The preparations come as close to 10,000 soldiers and other service members are deployed to relief efforts of Hurricane Helene in western North Carolina, Tennessee and elsewhere in that storm’s path.

A military veteran and an accomplice were charged with running an elaborate phone scam from inside a jail that targeted ailing veterans in healthcare facilities, including some who were in intensive care units. federal prosecutors said.
The pair allegedly targeted more than 60 victims from 30 medical facilities, some run by the Department of Veterans Affairs, and attempted 130 fraudulent transactions on victim accounts, obtaining about $8,000 from the scheme, the Department of Justice said.

The National Guard takes great pride in providing aid and assistance to their own communities in the wake of natural disasters. To that end, over 6,700 National Guard members from 16 states mobilized in response to Hurricane Helene. Guardsmen in Florida, Georgia, North and South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia mobilized in and around their home states. Additionally, Guardsmen from Maryland, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New York, Ohio, Kentucky, Maryland, Alabama, Indiana and Iowa provided assistance to the Southeast where Helene claimed over 200 lives.
