This is Chapter 5 in the Cancer Memoir. Catch up with previous chapters here.
Can you believe that fall is here? It’s wild to me how fast, but sometimes slow, this year has felt. I spent the first five months of 2024 going to the cancer center for chemotherapy. I don’t miss getting chemo infusions, but I do really miss the people— in particular my chemo nurses.
Walking into the cancer center for my last chemo session is a memory I will never forget.

General Stanley McChrystal is infamous for using technology developed for use against America’s enemies, against the American people themselves.
CDM wrote extensively about this before the 2020 election.

On September 26, 2024, the U.S. Air Force’s last KC-10 Extender took off from Travis Air Force Base, California, for long-term storage at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Arizona. In a farewell ceremony to the aircraft, Travis AFB and Air Mobility Command marked the end of the aircraft’s over 40 years of service. “Travis AFB will have the honor of bidding farewell to an aircraft that has been a vital component of the U.S. military’s global reach and power projection capabilities for more than four decades,” AMC said in a statement.
NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. — The Air Force is currently taking a more calculated approach to planning, developing and buying next-generation platforms — putting some of the service’s future aircraft programs in limbo as it looks for more clarity over the next few months.
During AFA’s Air, Space and Cyber conference last week, Air Force leadership doubled-down on its intent to field next-gen capabilities, including a sixth-generation fighter jet and bomber, accompanying loyal wingman drones and a modern tanker.
Raytheon has received another large contract from the Army for its Coyote interceptors, one of the latest moves in the service’s effort to expand its arsenal of counter-drone systems.
The $197 million cost-plus-fixed-fee deal was announced Thursday evening by the Defense Department as part of its daily list of major contract awards. Bids were solicited via the internet and one was received, according to the Pentagon. The estimated completion date for the work is Sept. 30, 2027.

The U.S. government’s plan to transition to a new bilateral security agreement with Iraq is about as clear as mud.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, two U.S. officials said that the relationship between U.S. and Iraq is fundamentally shifting but repeatedly refused to say how many of the roughly 2,500 U.S. troops currently in Iraq will withdraw from the country – if any – under the new agreement and where those service members who stay behind will be based. Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity under rules established by the State Department.
We’ve seen the memes and funny videos… the ones poking fun on the day your spouse comes home from work, drops their things and then turns to you with that face. You know the one.
Their serious face. The hesitant face. The I-have-news face.
We knew it was coming (or…we didn’t). But ready or not, it’s an essential part of military life. The moving. The orders. That face. We all react differently. Some stand still in shock. Some shed a tear. Others jump for joy.
For some spouses, it depends on their current location.
Transitioning from a military career to civilian life can be both exciting and overwhelming. One of the biggest challenges military families face during this period is financial stability. For years, the structure of military pay and benefits provided somewhat of a safety net. But with retirement or separation, families must navigate new financial landscapes without the same level of support.
To ease the financial burden of this transition, it’s essential to adopt smart financial habits and strategies.
