Starting next week, Pentagon leadership will no longer require civilian employees to submit five-bullet point emails spotlighting their previous week’s accomplishments, according to an internal, unclassified email viewed by DefenseScoop on Tuesday.
However, workers are being tasked to submit another round of ideas for eliminating waste and inefficiencies, via an online survey.

The Pentagon could soon expand homeschooling resources for military families, according to a memo written by Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth released Tuesday.
Military families homeschool their kids at about twice the rate of civilians, which has seen wider adoption among parents, frustrated by increased remote learning during the pandemic and debates over school curricula.
“Homeschooling offers an individualized approach for students and highlights the significant role parents play in the educational process,” according to the Department of Defense memo dated May 15.

The Navy relieved Rear Adm. Kevin Smith as program executive officer for unmanned and small combatants Tuesday, the service announced.
Smith was removed from that position “due to a loss of confidence based on a complaint substantiated by an Office of the Naval Inspector General investigation,” officials wrote in a press release, adding that the sea service “maintains the highest standards for leaders and holds them accountable when those standards are not met.

Navy Rear Adm. Kevin Smith has been fired as the program executive officer for unmanned and small vessels “due to a loss of confidence based on a complaint substantiated by an Office of the Naval Inspector General investigation,” service officials announced on Tuesday. 
The complaint dealt with a misconduct issue, a source with knowledge of the matter told Task & Purpose. No further information was immediately available.
“The Navy maintains the highest standards for leaders and holds them accountable when those standards are not met,” a service news release says.

Department of the Air Force Deputy Chief Information Officer Jennifer Orozco will serve as acting CIO while leadership searches for a permanent replacement for the role, an official told DefenseScoop.
Orozco has been the deputy CIO since September 2024 following an organizational reshuffle under the department’s broader plan to reorganize for future large-scale conflicts. As acting CIO, she will oversee the Air and Space Forces’ IT, cybersecurity, data and artificial intelligence modernization efforts. Orozco is taking over for Venice Goodwine, who is retiring as DAF CIO.

Navy Fleet Master Chief David Isom, a former member of Navy Special Warfare Development Group, or DEVGRU — commonly referred to as SEAL Team Six — has been selected to serve as the U.S. military’s next top enlisted leader, defense officials announced on Tuesday.
